NVBS Spirit Days

From Student Council:

The Student Council has arranged a series of fun-filled Spirit Days to raise the spirit of our school. We will need your support and participation to make this week the very best.

Since Homecoming is such a commemorative evening, we need the student body's support and enthusiasm to help fully decorate our gym. To do so, the Senior Class will be selling Spirit Chains, which your child may purchase for twenty-five cents each. The winning class that purchases the most links will receive a pizza party. Each team will also be assigned to make a poster that best depicts our school mascot and enthusiastic spirit. It must include Bulldog colors and a captivating chant or saying. It may not say anything negative about the opposing team. This poster will be judged during the homecoming week, and a winning class will be chosen.

Thursday will be "Crazy Day," and Friday will be "Team Color Day." On Thursday, simply dress crazy; and on Friday, dress in your team colors (within the rules that will be announced in chapel on Wednesday). Each member of each team must dress out in each day's theme or points will be deducted. If you choose not to dress out, you must come to school in that day's uniform. The middle and high school students will be going to the gym on Friday afternoon from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. for team competitions. Permission slips will be sent home on Wednesday.

NVBS Elementary Christmas Play

From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:

Thank you for allowing your child to participate in this year’s elementary Christmas play, The Animals’ Christmas Carol. The play is based on an old French carol that was adapted into a book written by Helen Ward. It is the telling of the Christmas story from the perspective of some local animals in Bethlehem.

I was very pleased with how well every student performed during auditions. However, I assigned parts for this play based on a student’s physical and vocal expression. If your child did not get the role they desired, please encourage him to work hard this year, and to look forward to the part he may get it next year.

I am very excited about practicing with your child in preparation for this event. Practice is scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday in the elementary chapel from 2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. The first practice begins tomorrow, on November 17. It is very important that your child is present, as he will be given his scripts and lyrics. If your child is unable to attend this practice or any other practice, please notify me via email at kcastillo@nvbschools.org. Please remember that all students participating may only miss two practices, with the exception of an emergency. The play will be performed on Wednesday, December 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the main auditorium on the Clyde property.

Students with the parts of group narrators or choir members will be required to wear their uniforms with winter attire such as scarves, gloves, and hats. To prevent the performers from becoming too hot, please do not plan for your child to wear a coat or sweater. Students with lead roles will be dressed to fit their part. I will need parents to help make or provide the costumes for the lead roles. If you are interested in helping with this task please let me know by the end of this week.

I am looking forward to the final product as I work with this amazing group of students!

2009 Fine Arts & Athletic Competition - Schedule and Important Details

The 2009 Fine Arts & Athletic Competition, hosted by Golden State Baptist College, will be held on Monday through Wednesday, November 16-18. Many of our students in 7th through 12th grade have already spent much time in preparation for this week. We are looking forward to a good competition.

Please read this message carefully for detailed information about the week and refer to the schedule provided here:

Competition Information and Guidelines: http://www.nvbschools.org/docs/faacguide09.pdf

Fine Arts & Athletic Competition Schedule: http://www.nvbschools.org/docs/faacsched09.pdf

The uniform schedule will remain the same throughout the competition with the following exceptions: young men should wear a black suit and the uniform tie if they are participating in choir or music ensemble competitions, preaching, or speech and drama. Young ladies should wear Wednesday's uniform if they are participating in choir or music ensemble competitions, Bible storytelling, or speech and drama.

Monday (November 16)

Classes will meet as normal until the competitions begin. The students that are competing on Monday will be transported to the college before their event begins. Please sign and return the release form on Monday, November 16 - http://www.nvbschools.org/docs/releaseform.pdf.

Unless a student needs to submit his projects (essay, poem, short story, painting, photograph, graphic design, etc.), he does not need to report to registration, as we have already pre-registered as a group.

Once your student is finished with his event, please pick him up immediately. We do not wish for any of our students to be left unattended on the college campus after 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday and Wednesday (November 17-18)

ALL students participating in the Fine Arts & Athletic Competition must be in attendance from 8:00-2:30 p.m. They must check in with their homeroom teacher by 8:00 a.m. as directed. For example, students in 7th grade have been instructed to check in with Miss Hussin in the Golden Grille overflow for daily attendance. The homeroom teachers will notify their students where to meet them.

No one may leave the college campus at any time during the competition unless they are accompanied by a parent. Homeroom teachers must be notified if a student is leaving before 2:30 p.m.

Middle school and high school students should not be at the Clyde Avenue property during competitions.

Parents must pick up their student(s) from the college property at 2:30 p.m. North Valley Baptist Schools is not responsible for any student after 2:30 p.m. unless that student is competing in an event that afternoon or evening. They are to be with parents only after 2:30 p.m. Faculty members may be present in the afternoon and evening to supervise students who are competing.

While parents are encouraged to attend events in which their child is competing, they should also maintain close supervision of their other children at all times.

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to the school office at (408) 988-8883 or info@nvbschools.org.

Great Americans Day

Wednesday, November 25, is our annual Great Americans Day Parade for our elementary school. This is a wonderful North Valley tradition, and we invite you to watch the parade, attend the special chapel service, and enjoy your child's class party on this day. Please note that school will begin at 9:00 A.M. and will dismiss at 12 noon.

Our annual parade will begin promptly at 9:45 A.M. in the school parking lot, weather permitting, and the chapel service will begin at 10:00 A.M. in the main auditorium. Each elementary class will be presenting a special Thanksgiving poem or song that you will enjoy.

Each elementary student should dress as a "Great American." We consider a great American to be a man or lady of character who has made a significant, positive contribution to our nation. We would like to suggest that the students dress up as Pastor Trieber, a President, a pilgrim, or someone from the 1700's or 1800's. A few examples would be George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin. Each student in 3rd - 5th grade will also be writing an essay about the great American they chose to portray. Their teachers will be giving more instructions regarding this next week.

"Great Americans" would not include movie stars, current athletes, or controversial historical figures whose actions are neither patriotic nor Scripturally sound. What some people today consider to be "great" are sometimes in contradiction to the Word of God.

Modest and appropriate dress standards do apply. First-, second-, and third-place ribbons will be given to a boy and girl in each class with the best costume. Please be sure that your child is dressed for this day! Your child's teacher will be sending a note home with more details about the class party.

Elementary Christmas Play

From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:

Our 2009 elementary drama is scheduled for Friday, December 16th at 10:00 a.m. in the main auditorium. Auditions for this theatrical event are scheduled for next week after school. Students auditioning are divided into two age groups:

Thursday, November 12

1st grade 2:45 - 3:15

2nd grade 3:15 - 3:45

3rd grade 3:45 - 4:15

Friday, November 13

4th grade 2:45 - 3:15

5th grade 3:15 - 3:45

Every student will need to have one song prepared to sing and have a poem memorized. The song does not need to have musical accompaniment or be very long. It can be a short Sunday School children's song or a hymn. The poem is preselected for each grade and will be sent home tomorrow. Students auditioning do not have to be perfect singers, but should be able to sing with energy, a smile, and capable of making the song easy to recognize. As for the poem recitation, students should have good facial and vocal expression.

There is availability for a few lead roles, group narrations, and choir parts. All students auditioning will be encouraged to participate, regardless if they get a lead part or not.

The only requirements for participants is that they provide winter attire as a costume, are able to attend after school practices, and demonstrate good behavior during practices. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45 - 3:45 in the Fireside Room. Practices will begin Tuesday, November 17. These practices are mandatory and participants must be in attendance every practice with the exception of two absences. If you feel your child will be unable to complete the requirements, please consider not having your child audition.

I am very much looking forward to this upcoming event. I know our students will do well and put on a great performance!

Carnival Contests

From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:

There will be three contests that will be taking place during the NVBS Carnival on Friday. Please take note of the times and cost of each contest if your child will be participating.

Costume Contest

This contest is for preschool children through second grade. Entry is free and students simply need to wear a costume to the carnival. The costume must fit the modesty requirements according to the school handbook. Costumes being worn will only qualify if they pertain to a Disney film, Bible character, or a storybook character. Any inappropriate costumes will be disqualified and the student will be asked to change. Students participating should meet in the middle of the gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. where they will be judged. The best dressed girl and boy will receive a $5 gift card to Jamba Juice.

Coloring Contest

Entry for this contest is one ticket. Kindergarten through third grade students may participate. Students who would like to participate must go to the coloring table and color the picture they are given. Pictures of the participants will be posted in the gym. The pictures will be judged at 7:30 p.m. and the winners of the two best pictures will receive a $5 gift card to Jamba Juice.

Pumpkin Contest

Kindergarten through fifth grade students may participate in this contest. Students interested in winning a cash prize will definitely want to participate. The entry is $5 which can be paid to the student's teacher. The entry fee must be paid prior to the day of the carnival so the participant can take home a miniature pumpkin. This pumpkin can be decorated at home and brought to the carnival where it will be judged. When decorating the pumpkin, participants should consider using paint, stickers, foam adhesives, yarn, glitter, paper, or any other craft supplies. The pumpkin can be decorated to express a theme or mimic a character or person. It may not be carved or it will be disqualified. The pumpkins must be displayed at the carnival till 8:00 p.m. when they will be judged. Winners will receive $25 for first place, $15 for second place, and $10 for third place. All participants will need to label the bottom of the pumpki n with their name and grade.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Castillo.

NVBS Carnival on Friday, October 2

From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:

Dear Parents,

It is again time for our annual school carnival! We are very excited about this fun activity that we get to sponsor each year. This year's donation system is exactly like what we did last year. We are asking that each class/homeroom be responsible for certain items pertaining to the carnival. This will help us tremendously! A list of donation items is attached. Please help your child's class by signing up to bring the items listed. All donated items must be brought in no later than Thursday, October 1st. All items can be turned into your child's classroom or homeroom class rather than dropping them off in the office.

As we have done each year, grades kindergarten through twelfth grade, will be responsible for running carnival booths. Parents can volunteer to work at their class booth in thirty minute rotations. Teachers from each grade will be in contact with you either by letter or by phone asking for help to supervise these booths.

We would also like to introduce a new attraction to the carnival this year as we will be doing a mini pumpkin decorating contest for kindergarten through fifth grade. The entry will be $5 and each participant will be given a miniature pumpkin that can be taken home and decorated with paint or craft supplies. Cash prizes will be given for first, second, and third place. Entry forms and details will be sent home with your child this week. The pumpkins will be displayed at the carnival and judged.

The costume contest and coloring contest, which we have done in the past, will also be part of our carnival festivities. Jamba Juice gift cards will be issued for the winning boy and girl in each contest.

We are looking forward to some delicious food and good fellowship. Thank you for your willingness to participate and make this an enjoyable event!

If you have any questions or concerns please contact, the school office or email, kcastillo@nvbschools.org.

Please review the billing information below and be sure to set a goal on how many prizes you wish to win. The candy sale will end Monday, September 28.

Please do not submit these payments to Miss Mason, and please do not have an older sibling turn in money collectively for younger sibling(s). Please submit payments in either $25 or $50 segments. No partial payments, please. Billing issues occur when the method above is not followed. If a minimum of $50 is not received by Monday, September 28, a maximum of $50 will be charged per student. In addition, a maximum of $50 will be charged for each candy box given to your student(s) that was not sold or turned back in by Monday, September 28.
