High School Field Trip to San Francisco Zoo

On Thursday, May 15, the high school students (grades 9-12) will be going to the San Francisco Zoo. We will leave the school property at 9:00 A.M. and return by 2:30 P.M. Students have the option of bringing a bag lunch or purchasing lunch at the Zoo's cafes and restaurants. The cost for this field trip is $8.00 (admission and transportation). This fee and the release form are due on Wednesday, May 14. Students will turn these in to their respective homeroom teachers.

If you are available on Thursday, we would love to have you join us as one of our chaperones. Contact Miss Leslee Hussin at lhussin@nvbschools.org or (408) 988-8883 if you are interested. We ask that you drive your own vehicle, because you may need to drive a few students if the bus is full.

As we look forward to our visit to the San Francisco Zoo, we would like to remind each of our high school students of their responsibility not only to our school, but also to the Zoo. Please review the following guidelines with your child:

  1. The Zoo requires that students stay with their chaperones at all times, regardless of the age of the student.
  2. Comply with the Zoo's "No Feeding" policy. For the animals' health and safety, do not throw anything into the exhibits.
  3. Do not tease the animals or allow anyone else to do so.
  4. Help keep the Zoo clean by throwing away all trash in the receptacles provided.

If you have any questions, please contact the school at (408) 988-8883 or e-mail lhussin@nvbschools.org.

We are very excited about kicking off our fourth annual Bowl-a-thon Fundraiser. As you know in years past, we have mainly pushed for the students to raise money. This year, we have adjusted the program in hopes that your family can better network your connections to collect funds from a source outside of the church.

The elementary students will be bowling at the 4th Street Bowl from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., and the middle school and high school will be bowling from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. All elementary parents must take their children directly to the bowling alley at 9:00 a.m. We understand that not all parents will be able to stay at the bowling alley to watch their children; however, we would like to ask if there are parents that would be able to stay at the bowling alley and carpool other children back to the school. Parents who are able to carpool children at 11:30 a.m. must submit a copy of their insurance and driver's license by Wednesday, April 9.

NVBS Spirit Days and Homecoming on January 24-25

The letter below was sent home with the students last Friday. We would like to keep you informed of events during this special week.

Dear Student Body,

As you already know, next Friday, January 25, is our annual Homecoming. Because Homecoming leads up to the biggest game of the season for our basketball team, the Student Council has arranged a series of fun-filled Spirit Days to raise the spirit of our school. The Student Council has decided on several main ideas and themes that will also be shown throughout the Homecoming week, and we will need your support and participation to make this week the very best.

Because Homecoming is such a commemorative evening, we need the student body's support and enthusiasm to help fully decorate our gym. To do so, the Student Council will be selling Spirit Chains, which you or your class may purchase for twenty-five cents each. By purchasing a link for your class' spirit chain, you lengthen your chain. The winning class that purchases the most links will receive a pizza party on February 8. Each class will also be assigned to make a poster that best depicts our school mascot and enthusiastic spirit. It must include Bulldog colors and a captivating chant or saying. This poster will be judged during the week, and a winning class will be chosen.

Spirit Days will start on Wednesday and will end on Friday of next week. Although you will not dress out on Wednesday, competitions will begin and points will be awarded to the winning teams. Thursday will be "Crazy Day," and Friday will be "Bulldog Day." Basically on Thursday, dress crazy! On Friday, dress in Bulldog colors. Each member of every team must dress out in each day's theme or points will be deducted. If you choose not to dress out, you must come to school in that day's outfit according to the uniform schedule.

Thank you!

Your Student Council

Library Update

From Mr. Jim Carey:

The NVBS library project is going extremely well. Thank you for helping to sell candy bars and for supporting the fall carnival this past semester. From these fundraisers, we were able to purchase new shelving for up to 9,000 books. We have also painted and recarpeted the room designated for the library.

Now the real work begins. Many of you have already donated books as part of the book drive, but we still need plenty of good reading material for grades K-12.

Perhaps you would like to consider purchasing books for the school library this Christmas. We are hoping that parents will go through their attics and closets during the holidays and give those books that are sitting at home a place to be used and appreciated. Some parents have helped us by watching for garage sales and listings on craigslist, eBay, and Amazon, where good used books are often only $1.00 each.

Next month, we will need help with taking inventory and cataloging our books. Each item needs to be assigned a call number following the Dewey Decimal Classification system, as well as a grade level zone. We are acquiring the software and barcode scanners in late December.

Our goal is to have the library open by the first day of school in January. If you have the love of reading and some time to spare, please e-mail Jim Carey or Leslee Hussin. Help us teach a child to love to read as well.

Great Americans Day on November 21

Next Wednesday, November 21, is our annual Great Americans' Day Parade for our elementary school. This is a wonderful North Valley tradition, and we invite you to watch the parade, attend the special chapel service, and enjoy your child's class party on this day. Please note that school will dismiss at 12 noon.

Our annual parade will begin promptly at 9:35 a.m. in the school parking lot, and the chapel service will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the main auditorium. Each elementary class will be presenting a special Thanksgiving program that you'll enjoy.

Each elementary student should dress as a "Great American." We consider a great American to be a man or lady of character who has made a significant, positive contribution to our nation. A few examples would be George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin.

This would not include movie stars, current athletes, or controversial historical figures whose actions are neither patriotic or Scripturally sound. What some today consider to be "great" are sometimes in contradiction to the Word of God.

Modest and appropriate dress standards do apply. First-, second-, and third-place ribbons will be given to a boy and girl in each class with the best costume. Please be sure that your child is dressed for this day!

Your child's teacher will be sending a note home with more details about the class party.

Thank you, parents, for all you do for our school. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

2007 Fine Arts & Athletic Competition - Schedule and Important Details

The 2007 Fine Arts & Athletic Competition, hosted by Golden State Baptist College, will be held this Monday through Wednesday, November 12-14. Many of our students in 7th through 12th grade have already spent much time in preparation for this week, and we are looking forward to a good competition.

Please read this message carefully for detailed information about the week and refer to the schedule provided here: faacsched07.pdf.

Monday (November 12)

  • Unless a student needs to submit his projects (essay, poem, short story, painting, photograph, graphic design, etc.), he does not need to report to registration, as we have already pre-registered as a group.

  • ONLY students competing in Monday's events should be at the college campus on this day. Once your student is finished with his event, please pick him up immediately. For example, if a student is competing only in Bible Memory, he should arrive a few minutes before 1:30 and be picked up at 4:00 (unless the event ends earlier than planned). If a student is only submitting his projects, please pick him up as soon as he is done. We do not wish for any of our students to be left unattended on the college campus.

  • Students should be in their regular Monday uniform. Young men may wear a black suit and the uniform tie if they are participating in the choir or music ensemble competition.

Tuesday and Wednesday (November 13-14)

  • Students NOT registered for the Fine Arts & Athletic Competition are to be kept home on these two days.

  • ALL students participating in the Fine Arts & Athletic Competition must be in attendance from 8:00-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. They must check in with their homeroom teacher by 8:00 a.m. as directed. For example, students in 7th grade have been instructed to check in with Miss Hussin in the Golden Grille overflow for daily attendance.

  • On both Tuesday and Wednesday, students should be in their Wednesday uniform.

  • Students may not leave the college campus at any time during normal school hours.

  • Parents must pick up their student(s) from the college property at 2:30 p.m. North Valley Baptist Schools is not responsible for any student after 2:30 p.m. unless that student is competing in an event that afternoon or evening. Faculty members will be present in the afternoon and evening to supervise students who are competing.

  • While parents are encouraged to attend events in which their child is competing, they should also maintain close supervision of their other children at all times.

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to the school office at (408) 988-8883 or info@nvbschools.org.

School Dismissal Safety

Please read this message very carefully.

Safety is always a great concern. If you are unable to pick up your child before 2:45 in the afternoon, please be sure to make the necessary arrangements ahead of time. Notify the school office and your child's teacher as to who will be picking up your child. The school office can be reached at (408) 988-8883 or info@nvbschools.org.

Do not pick up someone else's child unless you have been asked directly to do so by that child's parent. If another parent asks you to pick up his child from school, that parent must notify the school office immediately of this change.

Please discuss school dismissal safety with your child. Make sure he knows who can pick him up from school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

If you will be purchasing pictures, your child must have his order paid in full on picture day. Please note that late orders will not be accepted, but there will be a make-up day in 6 weeks. However, group pictures will not be retaken.

The photographers usually begin in the morning, so please make sure your child is present and on time.

If you have any questions, please contact the school office at (408) 988-8883 or info@nvbschools.org.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

For safety and efficiency, please read this message very carefully and share it with other people who may help transport your children to and from our school.

When dropping off or picking up your child in the school parking lot, please pull forward to the very front of the line near the entrance to the school before letting your child in or out of your vehicle.

If the lot is full, please wait patiently in line and be courteous of other parents who are also waiting. Always keep the safety of our students foremost in your mind when dropping off and picking up.
