Great Americans Day
Wednesday, November 25, is our annual Great Americans Day Parade for our elementary school. This is a wonderful North Valley tradition, and we invite you to watch the parade, attend the special chapel service, and enjoy your child's class party on this day. Please note that school will begin at 9:00 A.M. and will dismiss at 12 noon.
Our annual parade will begin promptly at 9:45 A.M. in the school parking lot, weather permitting, and the chapel service will begin at 10:00 A.M. in the main auditorium. Each elementary class will be presenting a special Thanksgiving poem or song that you will enjoy.
Each elementary student should dress as a "Great American." We consider a great American to be a man or lady of character who has made a significant, positive contribution to our nation. We would like to suggest that the students dress up as Pastor Trieber, a President, a pilgrim, or someone from the 1700's or 1800's. A few examples would be George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin. Each student in 3rd - 5th grade will also be writing an essay about the great American they chose to portray. Their teachers will be giving more instructions regarding this next week.
"Great Americans" would not include movie stars, current athletes, or controversial historical figures whose actions are neither patriotic nor Scripturally sound. What some people today consider to be "great" are sometimes in contradiction to the Word of God.
Modest and appropriate dress standards do apply. First-place, second-place, and third-place ribbons will be given to a boy and girl in each class with the best costume. Please be sure that your child is dressed for this day! Your child's teacher will be sending a note home with more details about the class party.

Elementary Christmas Play
From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:
Our 2009 elementary drama is scheduled for Friday, December 16th at 10:00 a.m. in the main auditorium. Auditions for this theatrical event are scheduled for next week after school. Students auditioning are divided into two age groups:
|
Thursday, November 12
1st grade 2:45 - 3:15 2nd grade 3:15 - 3:45 3rd grade 3:45 - 4:15 |
Friday, November 13
4th grade 2:45 - 3:15 5th grade 3:15 - 3:45 |
Every student will need to have one song prepared to sing and have a poem memorized. The song does not need to have musical accompaniment or be very long. It can be a short Sunday School children's song or a hymn. The poem is preselected for each grade and will be sent home tomorrow. Students auditioning do not have to be perfect singers, but should be able to sing with energy, a smile, and capable of making the song easy to recognize. As for the poem recitation, students should have good facial and vocal expression.
There is availability for a few lead roles, group narrations, and choir parts. All students auditioning will be encouraged to participate, regardless if they get a lead part or not.
The only requirements for participants is that they provide winter attire as a costume, are able to attend after school practices, and demonstrate good behavior during practices. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45 - 3:45 in the Fireside Room. Practices will begin Tuesday, November 17. These practices are mandatory and participants must be in attendance every practice with the exception of two absences. If you feel your child will be unable to complete the requirements, please consider not having your child audition.
I am very much looking forward to this upcoming event. I know our students will do well and put on a great performance!

Costume Contest
This contest is for preschool children through second grade. Entry is free and students simply need to wear a costume to the carnival. The costume must fit the modesty requirements according to the school handbook. Costumes being worn will only qualify if they pertain to a Disney film, Bible character, or a storybook character. Any inappropriate costumes will be disqualified and the student will be asked to change. Students participating should meet in the middle of the gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. where they will be judged. The best dressed girl and boy will receive a $5 gift card to Jamba Juice.
Coloring Contest
Entry for this contest is one ticket. Kindergarten through third grade students may participate. Students who would like to participate must go to the coloring table and color the picture they are given. Pictures of the participants will be posted in the gym. The pictures will be judged at 7:30 p.m. and the winners of the two best pictures will receive a $5 gift card to Jamba Juice.
Pumpkin Contest
Kindergarten through fifth grade students may participate in this contest. Students interested in winning a cash prize will definitely want to participate. The entry is $5 which can be paid to the student's teacher. The entry fee must be paid prior to the day of the carnival so the participant can take home a miniature pumpkin. This pumpkin can be decorated at home and brought to the carnival where it will be judged. When decorating the pumpkin, participants should consider using paint, stickers, foam adhesives, yarn, glitter, paper, or any other craft supplies. The pumpkin can be decorated to express a theme or mimic a character or person. It may not be carved or it will be disqualified. The pumpkins must be displayed at the carnival till 8:00 p.m. when they will be judged. Winners will receive $25 for first place, $15 for second place, and $10 for third place. NVBS Carnival on Friday, October 2
From Mrs. Kristin Castillo:
Dear Parents,
It is again time for our annual school carnival! We are very excited about this fun activity that we get to sponsor each year. This year's donation system is exactly like what we did last year. We are asking that each class/homeroom be responsible for certain items pertaining to the carnival. This will help us tremendously! A list of donation items is attached. Please help your child's class by signing up to bring the items listed. All donated items must be brought in no later than Thursday, October 1st. All items can be turned into your child's classroom or homeroom class rather than dropping them off in the office.
As we have done each year, grades kindergarten through twelfth grade, will be responsible for running carnival booths. Parents can volunteer to work at their class booth in thirty minute rotations. Teachers from each grade will be in contact with you either by letter or by phone asking for help to supervise these booths.
We would also like to introduce a new attraction to the carnival this year as we will be doing a mini pumpkin decorating contest for kindergarten through fifth grade. The entry will be $5 and each participant will be given a miniature pumpkin that can be taken home and decorated with paint or craft supplies. Cash prizes will be given for first, second, and third place. Entry forms and details will be sent home with your child this week. The pumpkins will be displayed at the carnival and judged.
The costume contest and coloring contest, which we have done in the past, will also be part of our carnival festivities. Jamba Juice gift cards will be issued for the winning boy and girl in each contest.
We are looking forward to some delicious food and good fellowship. Thank you for your willingness to participate and make this an enjoyable event!
If you have any questions or concerns please contact, the school office or email, kcastillo@nvbschools.org.
